Korobu SDA Preschool Sees Record Enrollment, Serving Over 500 Students
South Tarawa, Kiribati – Korobu SDA Preschool has achieved a remarkable milestone, now boasting the largest enrollment in its history with over 500 students. This impressive surge in enrollment has prompted the school administration to introduce a unique scheduling system, with three shifts designed to accommodate the growing number of young learners.
The first shift begins at 8 a.m. and runs until 9 a.m., followed by a second group from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The final class of the day runs from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., ensuring that each child receives the attention and quality education they deserve, despite the large numbers.
With only 25 teachers, the school serves a diverse student body, drawn from every corner of South Tarawa. The increase in student numbers is a clear indication of the preschool's popularity and reputation, which continues to grow year after year. Enrollment increases by 30 to 50 students annually, a steady rise that has captured the attention of educators and parents alike.
Principal Mrs. Kaue Titau attributes much of the growth to the success of Korobu SDA Preschool’s graduates. "Many of our students go on to attend Te Rurubao, the top English-language school in Kiribati, and we believe this connection has inspired more families to enroll their children here," she said. "The track record of our preschool in preparing children for academic success has definitely contributed to this year's record-breaking numbers."

Korobu SDA Preschool is one of many educational institutions across the nation that have benefited from the Kiribati government’s financial support. Through the payment of teacher salaries and additional benefits, the government plays a vital role in ensuring the quality of education provided to young learners in the country. This support has been crucial in helping the preschool maintain a high standard of education, despite the challenges of catering to a rapidly growing student population.
The newly-elected school board of Korobu SDA Preschool has met twice this week to address several pressing issues, prioritizing the safety and well-being of the school community. These include key matters such as the reinstatement of a full-time security officer to ensure the importance of ensuring a secure environment for parents, vendors, and children alike, aiming to provide the best possible experience for all who enter the school grounds. Other areas that require attention include the collection of outstanding school fees, as well as the review of teachers' duties and performance.
